Sthala Purana — the story

Translation verification in progress. Showing EN version. Help translate →

Kashi is said to stand not on earth but on the trident (trishul) of Shiva himself — during pralaya (cosmic dissolution), when all else is destroyed, Kashi is lifted on the trident and preserved. The Skanda Purana devotes its entire Kashi Khanda (100 chapters) to the city's sanctity. Adi Shankara is said to have received darshan of Shiva in Kashi as an outcaste, leading to his seminal Manisha Panchakam. The Jyotirlinga is a modest dark stone linga set in a silver-lined pit — devotees can touch it directly and perform abhishekam, a rare privilege at major Jyotirlinga shrines. The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt at least three times since the 12th century, the most recent demolition by Aurangzeb in 1669. The current structure, built in 1780 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, stands immediately adjacent to the Gyanvapi — the Well of Wisdom where priests are said to have hidden the original Jyotirlinga before the Aurangzeb demolition.

🧘 Best time to visit

Early morning Mangala Aarti (3 AM, ticketed) is the holiest and least crowded slot. Weekday afternoons (2-4 PM) are relatively quiet. Avoid Mondays (Shiva's day — heavy footfall) and Shravan month (Jul-Aug, when every Monday draws lakhs). Mahashivratri (Feb-Mar) is the most intense darshan of the year but expect 6-8 hour queues. October-March has pleasant weather; avoid May-June (peak heat, 45°C).

🎒 What to carry
  • Bilva patra (wood-apple leaves), dhatura flowers, Gangajal
  • Aadhaar / passport (ID mandatory for sanctum entry)
  • Avoid all leather — belts, wallets, bags must be surrendered at counter
  • Small cash for prasad and locker (₹10)
  • No mobile phones inside sanctum — leave at lodging or ₹10 locker
  • Warm shawl for 3 AM Mangala Aarti in winter (Varanasi dips to 5°C in Dec-Jan)
  • Comfortable walking shoes — Vishwanath Gali is a 400 m narrow heritage lane

Architecture & art

The Ahilyabai Holkar structure (1780) is a classic Nagara-style temple with a prominent curvilinear shikhara, enclosed within a walled compound. The two principal domes were plated with 750 kg of gold donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1835, giving Kashi Vishwanath its distinctive golden profile. The Nandi faces the sanctum from across the courtyard, not directly — an unusual layout created by the post-demolition reconstruction. The 2021 Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor is the single largest architectural intervention on the site in 240 years: a 5 lakh sq ft redevelopment connecting the sanctum to Lalita Ghat on the Ganga, incorporating 23 pre-existing shrines within the enlarged campus and accommodating far higher daily footfall.

History timeline

  1. Ancient

Original shrine lost to antiquity; mentioned in Skanda Purana Kashi Khanda (100 chapters dedicated to Kashi) and Shiva Purana as one of 12 Jyotirlingas.

  2. 1194

Temple demolished by Qutb-ud-din Aibak during the Ghurid invasion. Rebuilt by a Gujarati merchant during Iltutmish (1211-1266).

  3. 1585

Raja Todar Mal (Akbar's finance minister) and Raja Man Singh commission a reconstruction at Pandit Narayan Bhatt's urging.

  4. 1669

Temple demolished by Aurangzeb; Gyanvapi Mosque built on part of the original site. The original Jyotirlinga was reportedly hidden in the Gyan Vapi well by priests.

  5. 1780

Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore commissions the current temple structure immediately south of the Gyanvapi site. This is the sanctum that devotees visit today.

  6. 1835

Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire donates 750 kg of gold for the plating of the two shikharas.

  7. 2021

Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on 13 December 2021 — a 5 lakh sq ft redevelopment connecting the sanctum to the Ganga at Lalita Ghat, with the sanctum now accessible to a far larger daily footfall.

Special phenomena

Gyan Vapi

The Well of Wisdom in the adjacent courtyard is said to hold the original pre-1669 Jyotirlinga, hidden by priests during the Aurangzeb demolition. Its water is considered equivalent to all four Vedas combined.

Annapurna Darshan

Adjacent to Vishwanath is Annapurna Devi, who is believed to have fed Shiva himself during the cosmic famine. Devotees traditionally complete Vishwanath darshan with Annapurna darshan and receive anna-prasad.

Rudrabhishek

Unlike most Jyotirlingas, Kashi Vishwanath permits individual devotees to touch the linga and perform their own abhishekam with Ganga water, milk, honey, and bilva. The morning Mangala Aarti ticket is the most sought-after slot of the day.
